Owner-operators run their businesses from the truck. If you call when they're on a roof or under a house, you'll get voicemail or a rushed "call me later." Call when they're between jobs and you'll get a real conversation. Here's when that usually is.
Time of day
| Window | Why it works |
|---|---|
| 7:00–8:30am | Owners are planning the day, loading trucks, driving to the first job. Best window for most trades. |
| 11:30am–1:00pm | Hit or miss, but dental and medical office managers are often free over lunch. |
| 4:00–6:00pm | Crews are wrapping up and owners are doing quotes and invoices. Second-best window. |
| Mid-morning, mid-afternoon | Worst for owner-operators, who are usually on site. Better for larger firms with an office manager. |
Day of week
- Monday: the weekend's emergencies and the week's schedule. Avoid mornings.
- Tuesday–Thursday: the most reliable days.
- Friday: mornings are fine; afternoons are for wrapping up the week and getting paid.
Season, by trade
| Trade | Best season to pitch | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC | Spring and fall shoulder seasons | Heat waves and cold snaps |
| Roofing | Late winter planning, late fall wrap-up | The weeks after a major storm |
| Landscaping | Late winter and early spring | Peak summer days (call early instead) |
| Snow removal and property maintenance | Late summer and early fall | Storm days |
| Plumbing | Year-round; quieter weeks after the holidays | Deep-freeze weeks (burst pipes) |
| Painting | Winter, for exterior-season planning | Peak exterior season |
| Pest control | Late winter, before the spring rush | Peak summer |
| Cleaning | Year-round; mid-morning to early afternoon | Evenings (crews are working) |
Use the local time zone
If you're calling from Saskatchewan into Ontario and British Columbia on the same day, sort your list by province so you call each one in its own morning window. Our exports include city and province for exactly this reason.
Make the callback count
When an owner says "call me back," ask for a specific time and call at exactly that time. It's a small thing, and most salespeople don't do it.
