What home service businesses buy (and how to sell it to them)

The products and services contractors and home service companies spend money on, what triggers a purchase, and how to position your offer so owners say yes.

Home service businesses — roofers, plumbers, HVAC, electricians, landscapers, cleaners, painters, pest control and handyman services — are a huge market of small companies that buy a lot of things. They also have very little patience for vague pitches. If you understand what they already buy and why, selling to them gets much easier.

What they spend money on

What triggers a purchase

Owners rarely buy because a product is good. They buy because something happened:

Your job on the first call is to find out whether one of these has happened recently.

How to position your offer

  1. Talk in jobs and dollars. "Two more booked jobs a week" beats "increase engagement."
  2. Use their words. Estimates, call-backs, the slow season, crews, the schedule.
  3. Show local proof. Another contractor in their city is worth ten logos from somewhere else.
  4. Make it easy to start. Month-to-month, quick setup, no long contract.
  5. Be straight about price. Owners spend their own money and respect a clear number.

Where to find them

Every home service business publishes its phone number, and many publish an email address, because that's how customers reach them. Browse our lead directory by trade and city to see how many there are in your territory, then read how to build a local business lead list.
